Women and Girl Child Education
Gender equality is a global priority, which is reflected in the importance it is accorded in the Sustainable Development Goals. The goals talk about the need to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all and achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. Gender equality is closely linked to promotion of right to education.
There are many obstacles preventing women and girls from fully exercising their right to participate in, complete and benefit from education. Some of these are early marriage and pregnancy, gender-based violence, traditional attitudes about the status and role of women, poverty, geographical isolation and minority status.
AEAI South Asia, by ensuring girl children get access to education system from their childhood to higher studies is committed to promoting gender equality. Our project ENLIGHT is an embodiment of our commitment towards Women and Girl child education and empowerment.
Our Women Empowerment programmes have impacted 52138 girl children and 2192 CBOs with 21662 women members
The project supports girl children living in difficult circumstances facing stigma and exclusion across 8 Cities (Chennai, Trichy, Salem, Bangalore, Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata and Hyderabad) in India. In 2016, the project engaged feverishly with 1600 girl children from 8 social groups (girl children with disability, girl children from SC/ST communities, girl children of female sex workers, girl children from Arunthathiyar community; community engaged in manual scavenging, girl children from families engaged in waste picking, girl children infected/affected by HIV/AIDS, girl children from minority community engaged in Agarbatti (Incense Sticks) making, girl children from migrant families settled in slums). The project supported by Capgemini aims to support 10,000 girl children in a span of 5 years. Initiated in the year 2016, the project successfully enrolled dropouts into school, increased regularity & retention rates, improved competency levels amongst children in 3Rs, promoted Parents and Teachers participation in education and have facilitated access to nutritional and medical entitlements for children.
Promote Education of Girls in disadvantaged circumstances
- Through the ‘Enlight’ project, reaching out to girls from the most disadvantaged groups such as migrants in big cities, manual scavengers, rag pickers, girl children with disability, scheduled castes, sex workers and minorities.
Promote Entrepreneurship among women
- Encourage the women to form collectives and support them in establishing their enterprise through the support of financial institutions.
