Pre-departure training on sexual abuse for migrant women and adolescent girls


Exploitation and sexual abuse on migrating women and adolescent girls at the workplace and during travel is a common phenomenon which is seldom reported fearing threat to them and their family members by the alleged perpetrators who are mostly their employers.

The Migration thematic unit of Aide et Action in collaboration with local Civil Society Organizations of 6 districts in Odisha conducted a pre-departure training of migrant women and adolescent girls in 6 most migration prone Gram Panchayats of Balangir, Nuapada, Bargarh, Kalahandi, Sonepur & Boudh districts of Odisha.


The prime objective was to provide basic information and skills to the selected leaders among the migrant women and adolescent girls which will help them protect themselves against any sexual abuse, exploitation and extend help to other victims during migration. A total of 300 migrant women and adolescent girls identified as leaders were trained in 6 locations on a pilot basis. Women PRI members, local women leaders, local ICDS staff and govt. officials were also involved as resource persons to motivate the participants.


An information card with important helpline and contact numbers of native as well as destination, printed by Aide et Action, was distributed to the migrant women and adolescent girls to help them reach out at the time of need.
