In India, the number of children accessing primary education and reaching the secondary education stage has increased multifold. According to ASER 2014 report, India is close to reaching universal enrolment for the age group 6-14, with the percentage of children enrolled in school at 96% or above for six years in a row.In the context of Nepal, there has been a considerable expansion of schools during the past 15 years. Access to early childhood development and pre-primary, primary and secondary education has increased tremendously. Nonetheless, it is disheartening to see that most of the children in these primary schools cannot read the text books of their standard fluently and perform basic mathematics like addition and subtraction.
Aide et Action through its educational projects aims to improve the quality of education and promote local governance in schools through community participation in 965 primary schools located in the remotest areas of India and Nepal. These schools are attended by first generation learners of some ethnic and/or linguistic minorities making it a challenge for the teachers to make them understand. Backed by strong concepts – Liberate School and Back to basics, educational projects engage low cost Teaching Learning Material made using local material and Information Communication Technology to enhance the quality of learning.
Through the ‘Enlight‘ project, Aide et Action also reaches out to girl children living in difficult circumstances. The unique facet of this project is that it engages with different social groups – minority community, children of sex workers, dalits, specially challenged, HIV/AIDS and urban slum dwellers.
